Boy or Girl?

Matt & I went to a Perinatologist today to discuss the risks of us having a baby and any testing that can be done for our little one.  Overall I feel the appointment was a good one.  The biggest risk we face is my AMA (advanced maternal age).  We have decided that even if something is abnormal with the baby we would like to know - just so that we can be prepared.  There is a 1-year old screening test that combines a nuchal translucency (sonogram that measures the clear space in the tissue at the back of the baby's neck) with blood drawn from me.  The blood is sent to a lab in California that is able to separate the baby's DNA from mine.  Tests are then done on the baby's DNA.  The tests either come back positive (for abnormalities) or negative (no abnormalities).  It takes about 2 weeks to get the results.  There is a likelihood for false positives...but that would be better than a false negative.  Anyway, it's all screening - not diagnostic.  But, as part of the DNA analysis we will also be able know whether we are having a boy or a girl baby.  Both the sonogram and blood work were done today.  We saw a baby that has been growing inside me...still with a heartbeat and that was wiggling around.  And, it looked even more like a baby than the other ultrasounds we've had.  How exciting!

So, we should know in 2 weeks that all is okay and whether baby Bailey is a boy or a girl.  Kind of crazy considering I'm not quite 12 weeks yet.

Here's our little one.  Imagine little arms and legs wiggling around.  You can see the bones starting to form in the back and on the face.

  1. How exciting! I can't tell you how excited I am that you are going to find out the gender of this little one in 2 weeks! I'm not on my A game but I am going to say girl.
